How to use the flooring calculator
- Measure each room wall to wall at its longest and widest points. For L-shaped rooms, split them into two rectangles and add each as a separate room.
- Pick a waste allowance that matches your layout. Straight plank installs need about 10% extra for cuts; diagonal and herringbone patterns waste more.
- Enter the square feet per box from the product listing to see how many boxes to buy.
Flooring formula
area = length × width (for each room, then add them up)
to buy = area × (1 + waste %)
boxes = to buy ÷ sq ft per box, rounded up
Example: a 12 × 15 ft living room is 180 sq ft. With 10% waste you need 198 sq ft. At 22.5 sq ft per box that's 8.8, so buy 9 boxes.
How much extra flooring should I buy?
| Floor type / layout | Typical waste |
|---|---|
| Carpet, sheet vinyl in a simple room | 5% |
| Laminate, vinyl plank, engineered hardwood (straight) | 10% |
| Solid hardwood, tile in straight rows | 10–12% |
| Diagonal layouts, rooms with many corners or closets | 15% |
| Herringbone, chevron, patterned tile | 20%+ |
Keep one unopened box after the job. Flooring lines get discontinued, and matching a damaged plank years later is hard without a spare.
Measuring tips
- Include closets and the space under appliances that will sit on the new floor.
- Measure to the wall, not to the baseboard. The expansion gap is covered by trim.
- For stairs, measure each tread and riser separately; most stair nosings are sold by the piece.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate square footage for flooring?
Multiply the room length by the width in feet. For irregular rooms, split the floor into rectangles, calculate each one, and add them together. Then add 10% for cutting waste.
How many boxes of flooring do I need for 500 square feet?
With 10% waste you need 550 sq ft. At a typical 20 sq ft per box, that is 27.5, so buy 28 boxes.
Should I add 10% or 15% for flooring waste?
Add 10% for straight installs in ordinary rooms, and 15% for diagonal layouts or rooms with lots of angles. Herringbone needs about 20%.
